We love this time of year for home decor. That sweet spot between May and July, when you can put out Patriotic decor and leave it out over the span of two holidays. Since Memorial Day and Fourth of July are both Patriotic colors, we like to decorate for Memorial Day in the beginning of May, and then just leave everything up, and maybe add a bit to it, until after the Fourth of July.

This year I got together with my sister and made this fun Patriotic Bandana Wreath! It’s super simple, patriotic, and rustic all at the same time. It’s not huge, so it works for any door. It’s also a frugal wreath, that only cost about $7 to make total. There are some HIDEOUS wreaths at Walmart right now that are $16+ and it baffles me that each year people just buy them. Stop this madness! Make your own. Do it while you’re watching a movie, or TV, and it will be done in half an hour. This Patriotic Bandana Wreath is also easy to store so you can use it year after year!
Frugal tip: I found our bandanas at Walmart for $1.00. I gave you links below to purchase on Amazon if you don’t want to brave Walmart (because I get it), but just letting you know in case you want to save a bit!
Patriotic Bandana Wreath
You will need:
1 styrofoam wreath form
1 blue bandana
1 white bandana
1 red bandana
1 roll of burlap
1 cute patriotic centerpiece (we found ours at the dollar store)
Hot glue gun
The first thing you will need to do is plug in your glue gun so it can get hot. Then you will glue the end of the roll of burlap to the wreath form, and then just wrap the burlap tightly to cover the styrofoam. This will make a nice backing for when you tie the bandana strips on. Instead of people seeing the white styrofoam, they would see the burlap, which gives it a fun rustic twist.
Next for your Patriotic Bandana Wreath, you will need to cut 67,000 strips of bandana. Okay, I’m exaggerating a bit. This is definitely a craft you do while doing something else, or just when you have some time to burn. Realistically, use the folds that are pre-made in the bandana, and cut the strips. You will cut each strip to be about half as long as the bandana, and about an inch or two wide. One bandana is more than enough, for each color, and will leave you with some extra.
Mark the section where you want the blue to go, so you won’t do too much, or too little. The idea is to have it look similar to an American flag, so you will have a small portion of blue (which we just marked of with a permanent marker, right onto the burlap), and then alternate the red and white to give the illusion of stripes. You are literally just going to tie these strips onto the wreath form with a regular knot. It will look like it’s going to be flat and droopy at first, but the more you add, the more they kind of stand up.
Once you’re finished, attach the cute little centerpiece you got to the back of the wreath. If you use the one we got, we shortened the chain on the portion with the bell, as it was too long for what we needed. We just cut a few links off, and then re-attached the bell. We slid the hook at the top through one of the tied bandana loops at the back, and it’s perfect!
